If you’re dreaming of a wedding that’s nothing short of cinematic, the New York Public Library’s iconic Stephen A. Schwarzman Building might be the venue you’ve been fantasizing about. With its soaring marble staircases, vaulted ceilings, and Beaux-Arts grandeur, it has long been one of the most recognizable and sought-after wedding venues in New York City. Its appearance as the backdrop for Carrie Bradshaw’s ill-fated wedding in Sex and the City only added to its cultural cachet—further cementing its status as an iconic and aspirational wedding setting.
So what does it really cost to say “I do” at one of New York’s most dramatic and historic venues?
The Tulle Together Wedding Pricing Transparency Project is on a mission to collect all of the pricing PDFs for wedding venues across the country. All of the PDFs in our database – 2,000 total and more than 400 in New York – are contributed by other couples planning their weddings. That means we can walk through the venue costs for you – without you having to email them. Below, we’ve broken down everything in their pricing PDF—from base fees to bar packages—to help you figure out if the NYPL is the venue for you.

Fees & Total Cost Estimate
Let’s start with some total numbers before breaking down each fee individually. We combed through all the pricing details in the PDF to put together some high level quotes using Tulle’s Venue Calculator tool. This tool allows you to put in the most common elements of venue pricing PDFs to figure out the actual total without having to build a complex spreadsheet.
Venue Fee: $80,000
The space rental fee starts at $80,000, which includes access to:
- Astor Hall for your ceremony and/or cocktail hour
- Bartos Forum for dinner and dancing
The rental covers a five-hour event starting no earlier than 7:00 PM and ending at midnight. You can extend the celebration to 1:00 AM for an additional $10,000. Setup may begin as early as 6:00 AM. The venue fee does not include rentals, decor, or catering. It gives you access to the space, and that’s it.
Beverage Fee: $85 per person
Because the Library maintains its own liquor license, all alcohol must be purchased through them. Beverage packages start at $85 per person, including beer, wine, and liquor.
For a wedding with 275 guests (the Library’s max capacity for an on-site ceremony), the base beverage cost would be:
275 × $85 = $23,375
Upgrades and specialty cocktails can raise this total.
Estimated cost with catering
Catering is not included in the venue fee. All food and beverage service must be provided by an NYPL-approved, full-service caterer such as Olivier Cheng, Great Performances, or Abigail Kirsch.
Typical pricing ranges from $350 to $600+ per person, covering food, staff, and essential equipment. If your per person cost is around $400 per person (including the NYPL beverage fee) you would end up at around $200,000 for your venue, food and beverage estimate.

Estimates of Other Vendors
While these don’t come from the pricing PDF, based on area prices, this is some of the ranges you could expect when bringing in vendors for the NYPL.
Lighting, Sound, and AV: $20,000–$50,000
Transforming this historic space for your wedding will likely require professional lighting and sound vendors, such as Frost Productions or L&M Sound & Light. This budget covers ceremony mics, ambient lighting, dance floor effects, and AV technicians.
Rentals: $15,000–$30,000
Since the Library’s event spaces are rented empty, you’ll need to supply all tables, chairs, linens, and service equipment. Vendors like Party Rental Ltd and Taylor Creative offer a range of styles to fit your wedding vision.
Floral and Décor: $20,000–$75,000+
From dramatic floral installations to custom ceremony arches, working with top-tier designers like Lewis Miller Design or David Stark will give your event the wow factor to match the Library’s scale and splendor.
Planning & Production: $10,000–$25,000+
A professional wedding planner—approved by NYPL—is required. They’ll manage your vendor team, handle logistics, and ensure you’re in compliance with the Library’s guidelines.
Planners such as JZ Events or Lindsay Landman are familiar with the venue’s complexities and can help you get the most from your investment.
Entertainment: $8,000–$20,000
Live bands and DJs from vendors like Hank Lane or Elan Artists are popular choices, especially for weddings in Bartos Forum, where there’s ample room for a full dance floor experience.
Photography and Videography: $8,000–$20,000
NYPL only permits professional photography inside the building for couples hosting their wedding on-site. Top wedding photographers in NYC, such as Roey Yohai or Ira Lippke, are experienced with the venue’s dramatic lighting and architecture.
Additional Costs to Consider:
- Insurance & Permits: $500–$1,500
- Security & Load-in Staffing: $2,000–$5,000
- Add-ons (e.g., use of Trustees Room or extended load-in hours): Varies
- Air Conditioning: Note that Astor Hall and McGraw Rotunda do not have A/C
How much could your total wedding cost be if you got married at The New York Public Library?
When you factor in everything — from venue fees to vendor costs — Tulle Together’s Cost Forecast Tool projects that the total budget of a wedding at The New York Public Library could land close to $400,000, depending on your guest count (this estimates a 250 person guest count), design scope, and other vendor selections. This estimate factors in a range of typical wedding expenses beyond the venue & catering itself, helping couples get a realistic view of what their wedding might actually cost before making any commitments. Of course, someone with a high budget could easily spend more than this – but it’s a starting estimate for what that total wedding cost could look like.
